✨ NIOS Special Feature

Transfer of Credit (TOC)

Many students study in CBSE, State Boards, other Indian boards or international boards like IGCSE and IB, but fail to pass all subjects in Class 10 or Class 12.

Through NIOS Transfer of Credit (TOC), learners can carry forward the marks of up to two subjects from their previous board and complete the remaining subjects in NIOS with a single consolidated mark sheet.

What is TOC in NIOS?

Transfer of Credit (TOC) is a facility that allows:

  • School/Ex students of other recognised boards (CBSE, State Boards, ICSE, IGCSE, IB, etc.)
  • Those who have passed at least one subject but not qualified for the full course
  • To transfer the marks of up to two passed subjects into NIOS, provided those subjects are available in the NIOS scheme of studies. The student then needs to appear only for the remaining subjects through NIOS to complete the requirement of a minimum of five subjects.

📌 Key Official Points

🎯

Maximum 2 subjects can be transferred from another recognised board.

Only passed subjects are eligible (minimum 33% or the board's pass mark).

⏱️

Subjects must have been passed within the last 5 years.

📚

Subject codes/content must match or be equivalent to NIOS subjects.

TOC must be requested at the time of NIOS admission, not later.

🎓 How TOC Helps Different Students

📘 Case 1

Passed 2 subjects, failed 3

Example: A student in CBSE / State Board / IGCSE / IB has passed 2 subjects and failed in 3 subjects.

Using NIOS TOC:

  • The marks of the 2 passed subjects can be transferred to NIOS.
  • The student must then appear only in the remaining 3 subjects with NIOS.
  • After passing those 3 subjects in NIOS, NIOS issues a single consolidated mark sheet showing all 5 subjects.
📗 Case 2

Passed 1 subject only

Process:

  • That 1 subject can be transferred to NIOS through TOC.
  • The student then appears for the other 4 subjects in NIOS.
  • Once all 5 are cleared (1 via TOC + 4 via NIOS), the learner gets a regular NIOS certificate.
📕 Case 3

Failed in all subjects

Process:

  • TOC is not applicable (no passed subject to transfer).
  • The learner can still take fresh admission in NIOS and appear in all 5 (or more) subjects directly.
  • After passing, they receive an NIOS certificate equivalent to other recognised boards.

📋 TOC Rules – Important Conditions (Simple)

🔢

A maximum of 2 subjects can be taken under TOC from other boards.

🏛️

Subjects must be from a recognised board and passed within last 5 years.

⚖️

Only subjects that exist in the NIOS subject list and are equivalent in content can be transferred.

🔬

For practical subjects at Senior Secondary, TOC is allowed only if the learner has passed both theory and practical separately.

🔒

TOC is final once opted; you cannot later change which subjects are taken for TOC.

💵

There is a separate TOC fee per subject, and original mark sheets must be produced for verification.

📄 Consolidated Mark Sheet Benefit

Once you complete the remaining subjects through NIOS along with TOC subjects, NIOS issues a single consolidated mark sheet showing all five subjects (transferred + NIOS cleared). This mark sheet is recognized at par with any other board marksheet for higher education and competitive exams.
